Our clients presented us with a challenging brief to expand and modernize their heritage listed Edwardian home, transforming it from poorly functioning and dark into light-filled contemporary living with seamless indoor/outdoor access. The clients were inspired by Belgian and Dutch contemporary design: exposed steel structural columns, extensive use of glass, and Dutch gable terracotta. We were also asked to replace the side drive and rear garage with a street-facing dual bay carport – a challenging addition to get through planning at the best of times let alone in this high-level heritage precinct.

This renewed heritage home is now a generous, family house on a single level, with significantly increased amenity, northern solar access and available outdoor space. The architectural steel carport is an innovative response to the client’s brief and Council’s strict heritage controls while introducing the European contemporary design-inspired typology. The precision required for the exposed structural steel - inside and out - was challenging yet well executed. The enhanced spaces, natural light, connection between indoor and outdoor, and finishes, exude elegance. Architecturally savvy visitors to the home have concluded: “the house is a piece of art”.
