THE STORY BEHIND THIS DESIGN SOLUTION.

Our client wished for a modern interpretation of a country style home which provided enough space to accommodate an extended family staying during holidays. The design was to focus on outdoor living, self sufficiency, energy efficiency and was to incorporate recycled materials.

The rural locale exudes peace and tranquillity and the new double storey home captures the extended landscape views perfectly via an angular shaped plan affording both levels spectacular vistas through large picture windows and outdoor decks. A multi purpose room has been designed to link the main living areas with the option to close off via bi-fold doors as required. A large outdoor living space was located to the east and features a teppanyaki bar, kitchen servery and the fire pit.

Recycled timber has been used extensively throughout this design. A 116 year old Norwegian blue spruce grown on the property has been used in the outdoor cabinetry, teppanyaki bar, wall claddings, timber mantel, dining table and library bookcase. Mount Gambier fossiliferous limestone has also been used on the exterior, reflecting both a country heritage sense and an earthy natural appearance. Stacked stone walls to the outdoor area tie the house into the natural beauty of the landscape and a combination of rough and smooth surface blocks relieve the facade.

The house is fully self sufficient, including substantial water storage to service the entire house and gardens with no reliance on outside supply.
