THE STORY BEHIND THIS DESIGN SOLUTION.

Our brief was to restore and extend an “inter-war villa” to its former glory. 'Kilburn' was a tired, cluttered and dark home in need of rejuvenation. The existing home was to be renovated in keeping with its heritage character and to reinstate previously removed or damaged original features. The addition was to incorporate a contemporary internal feel to an open plan kitchen meals family and a bright open connection to the alfresco entertaining area. Our clients wanted a grand, stately family home that seamlessly flowed from the formal rooms to the living areas and out onto the alfresco and pool.

The primary feature of this project is the new ground floor living, 'heart of the home'. The striking contemporary kitchen with attached living spaces seamlessly open out to the rear yard and alfresco through transparent frameless glass stacking doors. The expansive outdoor living alfresco area visually connects and flows into the associated backyard, swimming pool, garage and internal living spaces, allowing interconnected enjoyment of these important family and entertaining spaces. The feature stairs exude the ambiance of a piece of art or furniture within this open plan family and entertaining living space.

Kilburn is a grade B heritage listed building, which is classified as a significant building within the context of the heritage precinct, warranting careful and considered renovation to secure it's future. After extensive research, this “inter-war villa” has been restored back to its intended original character. The front facade was renovated to reinstate original front entry porch and double doors and bay window into the front gable and includes new stucco finishes. This has been complimented by a new front fence, entry gate and timber arbours and formal landscaping.

Careful reinstatement of previously removed character features successfully improve upon the existing heritage protected facade. Features including the upper floor bay window, solid stucco porch balustrade, reinstatement of the house name and restoration of the front fence are all in keeping and enhance the original facade design. Internally, the formal dining and front sitting rooms retain the heritage character and operation of the home featuring crystal chandeliers, decorative ornate cornices and ceiling roses complimented by the antique dining table and side boards. All of the above has elegantly transformed the original home into a restored functional layout.
